The Flatshare
"Tiffy and Leon share a flat
Tiffy and Leon share a bed
Tiffy and Leon have never met…"
And this got me into reading it, your honor! You gotta believe me, I'm innocent!
Hey people! Today I'm here to write about a book that I finished reading this morning. Absolutely delightful!
'The Flatshare' is a romance novel written by Beth O'Leary and it's so vanilla, I cried. This is a story about a girl, Tiffy, who needs to find a cheap apartment really fast. She finds an ad that is advertising this weird concept of a flatshare, where she'll essentially be sharing this apartment with a stranger that she has never met before; and that she'll never meet for as long as she stays in the apartment. Now, how's that gonna work is the real question. The stranger- Leon, is a palliative care nurse at an hospice and works only the night shifts. So he'll be occupying the apartment during the day, while Tiffy will occupy the apartment during night as she works during the day as an editor at Butterfingers.
The plot is sweet, funny and wholesome as it revolves around the lives of Leon and Tiffy who are struggling individually with their own problems while they talk using post-its and notes that they write and leave for each other which is really cute. They made this arrangement work and life takes turns through the plot as the story moves ahead. (Had it not been a romance novel, their arrangement could've been a great plot for a thriller novel)
Why I'm writing this article is because I desperately want someone to turn this book into a movie and have come up with a plausible suggestion for their cast. Now if you stay with me, I'd like to introduce you to our lead characters!
Tiffy is a red-haired bubble who fits the lines- 'the idea of being vague and mysterious is appealing to me, but I overshare everyday' (Leon finds it really amusing). She is spontaneous and full of life, the sort that distant relatives and absent neighbors still like to claim some credit for. People like to call her 'larger than life' as she is unconventionally taller than most people.
She is facing trouble whilst coming out of a mentally abusive relationship with a guy but her supportive and very good friends Mo, Rachel and Gerty stick with her through thick and thin.
So, for Tiffy's character I thought of-
*drumroll*
SHANNON PURSER
Whereas, I picked Leon's character from a site that allows users to vote for their respective choices of cast in case a book turns into a movie/series.
Leon, is reserved and shy. His point of view is written in terse sentence fragments, which was extremely difficult to get used to. A large part of his story revolves around his brother Richie who has been incarcerated, and Leon believes he is innocent.
Leon is a nurse in palliative care, and seeing his connect with his patients, especially one young girl, was heartwarming. I also thought having a male love interest in a contemporary romance novel whose job is typically considered more of a caretaking job was wonderful, because it fights toxic masculinity and breaks the perpetuation of harmful male stereotypes.
So for Leon's character, they had ...
DEV PATEL!
*Swooning*
As I grew increasingly more connected to Leon’s character, I became more convinced of his and Tiffy’s relationship.
Man, I'd love to see them in a flatshare setting! And I'm positive about this. What say?
